The Waste Business & Why Recycle?

Large quantities of waste materials used in building demolition and construction are reclaimed at various facilities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Every day, old buildings are being knocked down and replaced by new, larger state-of-the-art buildings.  The debris from these demolished buildings can be used as cover material for landfills, fuel for energy use, or various types of recycled cover for landscape beautification uses.

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste is generally bulky and dense, taking up more valuable landfill space than solid waste materials.  Construction and demolition waste generation varies on building project, according to the type of construction and the stage of construction.  By recycling these types of materials, landfills are used properly, and the environment benefits by not over-using our valuable natural resources.

When a home or building is being framed, most of the waste is wooden or metal material.  When fixtures are being installed, e.g. windows, doors, and heating and cooling units, substantial volumes of corrugated cardboard are generated.  Citywide Disposal strives to recycle or direct many of these materials to centers for re-use as mentioned above.

Typically, the waste generated from clearing a new site in preparation for development and also during construction are likely to be mostly soil, clay and stone.  Together with smaller amounts of damaged or substandard building materials, massive amounts of waste are generated and disposed of without thought of possibly recycling this material.  These materials can be utilized in various recycling processes.  Citywide Disposal is committed to building a better environment with proper handling, and utilizing low cost innovative dumping outlets within our region.

Waste material generated during the demolition of a building may include: soil, sand, gravel, concrete, stone, bricks, wood, metals, glass, plastics, paper, board and textiles.  Many of the waste materials from construction and demolition projects can be reused or recycled into new materials.

Materials that can be recycled include:

 Wood Material
 Drywall Material
 Metal
 Rubble / Rock
 Cardboard / Paper / Plastic
 Concrete Debris
 Soil / Clay

Possible reuses for construction and demolition wastes include:

 Landfill daily and final cover
 Landfill temporary access roads;
 Fill for road and airport embankments / projects
 Land reclamation
 Cover and bedding materials for landfill liners;
 Construction drainage control.
 Re-Fuel Energy
 Landscape Beautification
 Proportionate Building Material

The primary motivation for reducing and recycling construction waste is economic and environmental.  Builders should evaluate the potential for recycling construction waste to determine if recycling is economically viable and environmentally sound on job sites or projects.

Key steps to determine if recycling makes economic sense:

• Identify recyclable / reclaimable materials.
• Determine a site specific waste management plan and include it in contract agreements.
• Determine the cost / savings of recycling.
• Implement the waste management plan.
• Monitor and encourage the participation of contractors and employees.

Benefits of recycling construction and demolition wastes are:

• Improved profit / savings for both builder and client.
• Reduced environmental impacts.
• Reduced volume of waste hauled to landfill sites.
• Reclamation of valuable items like metals, bricks, and soil.
• Avoiding extraction of virgin materials by using old concrete and stones.
• Reduced transport costs to landfill sites.
• Improved safety at construction sites.
